HIGH MOUNTAIN HOME
Mountain Village, CO
Residing at over 10,000’ in the San Juan Mountains, this property is blanketed with over decades old garden beds that have become very well established since we began caring for them many years ago. Most of these beds are separated by sod pathways and aspen and spruce trees with native shrubs and ornamental grasses providing structure and a stable feeling to the gardens. Boulders and dry creek beds run throughout the gardens and the homeowner’s bronze statues are thoughtfully positioned as accents by the ponds.
Our philosophy when it comes to lawns is to use them sparingly in the landscape and to design them with a specific function. One of these functions can be walkways between garden beds to provide a soft scape access. This can be very useful in areas where infiltration is important, especially when it is mandated that all water be kept on the property or when the homeowner is looking to decrease initial costs by reducing hardscape.
Over the years, we have re-designed the beds, thoughtfully replacing non-thrivers with performers, allowing ground covers to spread and mingle, adding more interest through texture and color, all why highlighting the relationships between plants and hardscape, and protecting the incredible mountain views.
